Reporting to the Executive Director, and working closely with the Head of Operations and the Board of Directors’ Finance Committee, the Head of Finance is responsible for the oversight of all budgeting, forecasting, accounting, and reporting activities for Charlotte Lab School. The Head of Finance works closely with the Head of Operations, the senior leadership team, and Parent-Teacher-Student Organization and is involved in presentations to the board, finance committee, and lenders. The Head of Finance will lead the day-to-day accounting and financial planning operations for Charlotte Lab School with a total operating budget of approximately $10 million. The Head of Finance is responsible for relationships with Acadia, bank partners, and key vendors. The Head of Finance has functional responsibility over all accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration. The Head of Finance has support from the Operations, Development, Talent, and Network Teams. 


Accounting Leadership

  • Develop, analyze, and make recommendations relating to accounting and financial systems to ensure effective, efficient, sustainable, and transparent network-wide financial practices and operations
  • Oversee the accounting and reporting processes to ensure accuracy of data and timely monthly and year-end reporting
  • Lead and organize the annual budgeting process, including the development of high-level, detailed annual, and monthly cash-flow projections
  • Analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner, clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep Executive Director, Senior Leadership, and the Board abreast of the school’s financial status
  • Develop long-range forecasts, incorporating additional potential new schools and campuses
  • Facilitate a long-range real-estate financing plan
  • Participate in regular, organization-wide initiative to update annual projections
  • Prepare monthly Board reports and organize regular Finance Committee meetings

Team Leadership

  • Leverage strengths of the current staff to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement clear, transparent, and sustainable systems and processes for financial planning, budgeting and accounting
  • Partner with Director of Development to refine annual fundraising targets, monthly benchmarks, and marketing message, including KPIs and financial targets
  • Oversee execution of all grants; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period.  Working with Director of Development to ensure that necessary financial reports are prepared for current and prospective grant opportunities; 
  • Oversee the research, preparation, application, implementation, and reporting for state and federal grants, in collaboration with the Executive Director, Director of Development, Head of Operations, and Heads of School.
  • Oversee the payroll function and related systems; work with the Director of Human Resources to ensure that appropriate paperwork is completed each month in a timely fashion
  • Oversee the full coordination and the gathering of required audit information to prepare annual audit
  • Work cross-operationally to remain on-budget and obtain clean audits for each fiscal year

Candidate MUST:

  • Hold a BA/BS degree in Accounting and demonstrate solid knowledge of current accounting principles and practices      
  • Have non-profit sector experience, with up-to-date expertise regarding audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations
  • Possess strong skills with Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets
  • Have a minimum of 5 years experience in public accounting experience, experience in K-12 or charter school education preferred
  • Be detail oriented, balanced with the ability to see the “big picture”
  • Be comfortable working in a collaborative team environment and demonstrate a proven track record of successfully managing and coaching others.
  • Possess strong communication skills and demonstrate capability of presenting accounting and financial requirements to faculty leaders and the Board of Directors
  • Have excellent organization, time management, and follow-up skills; ability to prioritize and demonstrate an appropriate sense of urgency
  • Demonstrate history of successfully implementing/integrating systems, policies and protocols, with an ability to work and lead project teams
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills; easily build relationships with leaders and board members

Compensation and Benefits

Charlotte Lab School offers competitive compensation commensurate with experience and education level. The position includes medical insurance for the employee, with voluntary dental and vision plans, and spouse/family coverage. Lab also provides access to a Flexible Spending Account for health and childcare expenses and an opportunity to contribute to a 403b retirement plan. Lab provides the opportunity for Lab employees to earn 12 PTO days each year (1/month). Full time Charlotte Lab School faculty members also receive priority in the student admissions process.
